Would You #Hire A #Maid? #Relationship

The question is, if you could afford the cost, would you hire a maid?

Back in Africa, working women often employ a maid or a nanny to take care of their kids, cook, clean and shop. Hired hands come with help, headaches or heartaches.

My focus is the heartache hired maids have brought to some marriages. In many instances, the hired maid, often a young girl from a poor background is left to cook the meals, wash the clothes, feed and take care of the kids in the absence of the working mum.

Quite often, the wife is 'redundant' in the home, except in warming up her husband's bed. In some cases, even that 'chore' suffers because she is too tired after a long day at her high pressure job.

Many women now occupy position of power and authority and in their bid to support their family, the same family suffers. How ironic!

As a result, the maid slips from hired help to cosy mistress. The wife finds
out too late her husband has found her replacement in the young woman she brought from the village to help look after her home.

In the UK, the cost of hiring a maid is exhorbitant. To me, it is good news.

I hired maids for the first eight years of my marriage in Nigeria. They brought more headache than I can count.  I found them unreliable and my child has a burn scar. In many instances, maids walked out of their jobs as I prepared to go to work. I called my boss and looked after my kids. Of course, you don't get promoted as you should if you are not dependable! But I cherished those moments.

Then, we relocated to the UK and I joyfully washed off my hand from hiring help of any kind. We have enjoyed happy days for the past seven years. The job of training my kids fell squarely on me and my husband. What a tough and rewarding job. I don't want it any other way. My husband is a gem and I thank God for my family.

MY TIPS

1. Women, wake up, keep your eyes open and find the perfect balance between ambition, getting financial independence and building a loving and Godly family.

2. Don't swap your family for wealth, position, power or ambition.

3. Set boundaries for your maid or hired help. Keep your maids away from your matrimonial bedroom. Clean the room and change the bed linens yourself.

4. If you must hire help, get someone fairly older than you and your husband but strong enough to help.

5. Make time for your husband and kids. Jobs and money come and go, family is constant.

Flirty & Feisty Romance wishes you a happy and thriving relationship.

The Mind-Blowing Editing of Sparkling Dawn #Romance #NewBookCover

SPARKLING DAWN - Hero and Heroine

Meet fiery, red-haired Chloe, a woman with an axe to grind and green-eyed Warren, a man determined to claim the woman from his past.

In early June 2014, editing work started on Sparkling Dawn - the fifth Novel in Flirty & Feisty Romance Novels, first published in July 2011.

To Mark Sparkling Dawn third anniversary and taking readers feedback into consideration, I decided to put lessons learnt in my four years writing journey to test by re-launching this ununforgettable story.

I acquired (more like, she found me) a fantastic editor, Dorothy May Mercer who showed no mercy in highlighting in red colour, the areas in the novel requiring improvement. I must confess, editing isn't for the faint-hearted. Lol!

As a writer, when you pick up your published work after a couple of years and read it through a magnifying glass, sometimes, you wonder whether you wrote the book. *Smile*

Errors that didn't jump out at you before, scream; "here I am".

The New Sparkling Dawn has gone through intense surgery. There were days I logged in seven straight hours! In editing the story, I fell in love again with Chloe and Warren, but had to trim off all the "fat"!

To share my experience with you, the "fat" my editor wouldn't tolerate, includes;
the use of flowery, long-winding language, similar adjectives describing the same thing, too many adverbs, inconsistent tenses, telling instead of showing, frequent use of "that" etc.

Also, in line with one reader's comment, the language was too formal. We have now minimized the use of "perhaps" and rewritten several dialogue and action scenes to make it read and flow better. You will find the new novel to your taste. Lol!

To my relief, I have sent off my edited copy to Dorothy. I was tempted to do my traditional dance, but I'll wait until she gives the file an all clear.

SPARKLING DAWN - New Cover

Join me to celebrate the new cover, designed by author and fabulous critic, Bryden Lloyd.

My editor emailed her response this morning.

"Hi Stella, OMG! Your cover (Sparkling Dawn) is fantastic! Just beautiful! And so smart with the sun dawning and all".

Thank you to my dear friend and poet, Celestine Nudanu and my lovely fellow Romance Writers of West Africa authors (Netty Ejike, Kiru Taye, Nana Prah, Seun Odukoya, Bebe Hamidu and Empi Darko - who gave helpful feedback on the cover. And thank you to my dear friend and author, Simone Beaudelaire for tweaking the blurb to an exciting new height and the very amazing Maya (Lovebites & Silk) for formatting consultation.

Designed by author, Bryden Lloyd
Genre: Contemporary Romance
First Published: July 2021
Pages: 272
New Release Date: June 2014
Editor: Dorothy May Mercer (author and publisher)

SPARKLING DAWN - Blurb

Years ago, Chloe developed a secret crush on Warren, but a painful event led her to believe
she had been set up. To preserve family ties, she kept the humiliating incident and her subsequent actions secret.

Now, a high-powered freelance fashion journalist, Chloe intends to live her jet-set life to the fullest, until her former crush unexpectedly knocks on the door.

Warren is still drawn to Chloe and has no idea why she holds back from him. Will they reconcile, or will Chloe's secret tear Warren's family reputation apart?

SPARKLING DAWN - Snippet

Reaching for his polo shirt, Chloe tugged at the top, intending to rid Warren of the offending material. Making it easy for her, he flung the shirt off in one swift movement.

Her hot lips latched onto one nipple. Not letting him dictate the pace of this passionate session, her fingers caressed his tight abdomen, his sinewy flesh clenched and unclenched.

Warren sucked in his breath. “I haven’t quite finished my speech, Chloe.”

She claimed his mouth with hers. “You do the talking, while I explore your body,” she whispered into his ear as she tried to work his belt loose.

As her soft flesh made contact with his pelvis, he gritted his teeth to control the rush of blood and tender emotion gathering in his groin.

Grabbing hold of both her hands, he issued his threat. “If you don’t keep your fingers under control, we’ll never get to the really important bit.”

To be included once my editor is happy! Fingers crossed, in about a week's time.

Do You Accept Compliments? #Romance #Dating

Women, when your husband, fiance or boyfriend compliments your dress sense, beauty, intelligence or good deed, how do you react?

Do you belong to the confident class who receives the compliment with grace, a smile and gracious response as indicated;

Husband: "My darling, you look absolutely gorgeous today."

Confident wife (or girlfriend) laughs and bats her eyelashes: "Thank you my loving husband (boyfriend)."

Or do you fall into the insecure group who brushes off the compliment with a frown and then wonder why years later, there are no lovely words when they put in so much effort? Check out the insecure wife's response;

Husband: "My darling, you look absolutely gorgeous today."

Insecure wife frowns and walks away muttering, "Please stop flattering me. You know I
don't like it when you go on and on."

If you belong to the insecure group and you cherish your relationship, here are my tips;

1. CATCH yourself in time before those ungracious words fly out of your mouth.

2. RECEIVE the compliment with grace, a cheerful smile and say something kind in return.

3. LOVE who you are and give your husband (or boyfriend) a chance to love you.

When you have heard these compliments more times than you can count, you would believe and continue to live up to expectation.

EXCERPT

The driver said he would remain in the area while they worked and gave his cell number to Nils. The team exited the van, and they all took a few minutes to silently scan their surroundings.

Abject poverty hit Charles like a slap. He’d read a lot about the country, but seeing it in
person was another story. The area was a stark contrast from the bustling, modern city they had just left not more than thirty minutes ago. The team leader’s voice faded into the background as Charles’ gaze roamed the area.

A combination of primitive huts dotted the landscape with a few small buildings that appeared to be made from large logs and mud with thatched rooms. It must have rained recently, because the center of the area was nothing more than a huge mud puddle. The few relatively modern buildings in the village were cinderblock construction. Six people dressed in scrubs stood outside the entrance of the white building.

This must be the hospital.

As they approached the building, which from the outside looked more like it should’ve housed an auto repair shop, he gave them a fast overview about the village and the hospital in excellent but heavily accented English.

“Drs. Pategi and Ijalana are the only two doctors working here on a regular basis. They have two female nurses and two nursing assistants, both male. We will meet with them to ascertain exactly what they need from us.”

As the team approached the building, the expectant smiles of the hospital staff greeted
them. Charles’ gaze was immediately drawn to the heart-shaped ebony face of the woman dressed in bright pink scrubs. She wore her hair natural, closely cropped and appeared to wear no makeup on her slanted eyes and only a deep wine color lipstick on her lush mouth.

“Welcome to the Stella Obasanjo Hospital,” the shorter man said. “We are so honored you’ve come to work with us. I am Dr. Olushula Ijalana. You can call me Lou. This is Dr. Joseph Pategi, and this is our staff." He introduced the two nurses and their assistants.

He couldn’t take his eyes off the beautiful dark-skinned nurse whose name was Adanna.
Their gazes met, and a distinct look of recognition momentarily swept across her face.

When the introductions were done, the visiting team shook hands with the host staff. Charles shook Adanna’s slender hand, and she stared up at him with such intensity in her onyx eyes, he couldn’t look away.

“Charles Stafford. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

“You also, Doctor. We are honored that you decided to join us.”

He had to mentally slap himself in order to concentrate on what Dr. Ijalana was saying. And he was good until Nurse Okoro turned around and preceded them around the outside of the building.

The easy sway of her generous hips grabbed his attention like a mugger with an old lady’s purse. Black American women had inherited their voluptuous rear ends from their sisters in the Motherland, but this was the real deal.

Charles smiled to himself. It didn’t matter how far removed people were from their native land, some things were ingrained. And any man of African heritage would always admire a spectacular ass.

"Do you want me to tell you something really subversive? Love is everything it’s cracked up
to be. That’s why people are so cynical about it. It really is worth fighting for, being brave for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don’t risk anything, you risk even more."
